Hope Within Initiatives (HWI), is a non-profit organization that exists to prevent recidivism through education and support. HWI is dedicated to addressing the growing number of individuals released from prisons and jails who are returning to our communities. Our goal is to offer comprehensive, collaborative strategies that tackle the challenges of reentry. By doing so, we aim to enhance public safety and reduce recidivism.
To make a lasting impact on the youth, we provide culturally relevant education and training to help prevent involvement with the criminal justice system and reduce substance abuse. Currently, our primary focus is on preventing youth and young adults from misusing opioids and other drugs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a significant increase in opioid-related drug overdoses among individuals aged 15-19 since 1999, with heroin being the leading cause of overdose in this group as of 2015. In response, we are grateful to have received a $100,000 grant from the AmerisourceBergen Foundation , which will allow us to offer education, training, drug prevention services, and a program for returning unused opioids starting in 2020 and beyond.
Additionally, HWI has been awarded a grant to implement the Treatment, Education, Mutual Help Groups, and Prevention (TEMP) Initiative. TEMP facilitators will utilize curriculum from the State of Ohio’s "Start Talking" movement to combat the opioid epidemic impacting Northwest Ohio. This initiative will target youth in grades K-12, as well as their parents, in the 43605 and 43612 zip codes.
